Building Autism Awareness in Construction and Demolition

Our work involves more than what happens on site. It also means understanding and supporting the people and communities around us.

That’s why some of our team attended an Autism Awareness in Construction course last week.

The course was organised by Octavius in preparation for the demolition of Raby Hall Road bridge on the M53 as the project compound will neighbour Autism Together, a leading provider of services and support for autistic people.

The course gave S Evans & Sons and the extended project team a greater understanding of how construction and demolition work can cause sensory overload, disrupt routines and make it difficult for people with autism to cope. It also looked at how the construction and demolition industries can increase representation of autism in the workforce and put the right support in place so people can thrive.

Hannah Mackinlay, one of the S Evans team who attended the course, said: “The course was really valuable. It helped us understand how our work can affect autistic people and the importance of considering their needs throughout a project. It was also a great opportunity to learn more about Autism Together and the important support the charity provides.”
