Complex City-Centre Demolition
S Evans & Sons were tasked by LCC/Balfour Beatty to remove and recycle a 6-span post tensioned concrete bridge in the heart of Leeds City Centre. The bridge provided access into the city centre by crossing the A64(M), a reconstruction strategy would need to be developed to limit disruption to the congested traffic routes. Careful consideration around the deconstruction sequence was needed due to the structure’s proximity to the various commercial and residential properties including the newly opened hotel.
The removal was phased over 2 major visits to allow the new structure to be built 50% at a time so it was not to significantly impact traffic. Our team of specialists used a combination of SPMT’s, 1000t mobile crane, diamond wire saws and traditional demolition techniques to safely deliver each phase within two weekend road closures.
Phase 1 and 2 was successfully delivered during the worldwide pandemic. The works was a high success; all elements of the project were completed ahead of programme with no incidents.
To significantly reduce environmental impacts a cut and lift method was devised, using specialist subcontractors during the worldwide pandemic our team used SPMTs, Mobile Cranes, and Diamond Wire Saws to remove 1500 tonne of the concrete structure within 2 consecutive weekend road closures.
Phase 1 of the works was a high success; all elements of the project were completed ahead of programme with no incidents and we are looking forward to completing Phase 2 of the works in 2021.
