Demolition and site clearance

Clearance of the former Bombardier site in Crewe required S Evans & Sons’ demolition expertise in order to make way for Countryside Properties to build 263 new homes.

The brief was to clear the site fully, removing 17 acres of buildings down to slab level including the West Street wall which was 250 metres and 12 metres high. A full monoflex scaffolding structure was erected to tackle this part of the project, which used a combination of hand and mechanical demolition to avoid the wall falling onto a busy road which neighboured the site.

7 to 60 tonne excavators with grab breakers and shears were used to complete the work. The team also paid special attention to minimising site waste and reclaimed as many of the site materials as possible – including more than one million bricks, 20,000 slates and 10 tonnes of timber.
