Major Rail upgrades

As part of Network Rail’s £1bn rail upgrade in the North of England, we were tasked with clearing a number of Manchester city centre sites to make way for faster and more frequent rail services.

The team demolished multiple warehouses, buildings and structures to the north of Piccadilly Station, which included licensed asbestos removal, rail bridge demolition using high-reach machinery, the removal of a steel bridge over water using 100 tonne lifts, managing listed structure protections and abutment demolition. In addition, the site was fully remediated and all materials were recycled and processed on site.

Careful planning and consideration underpinned this project, which was carried out in a busy city environment and adjacent to active construction sites, live rail infrastructure, main carriageways, commercial businesses and a residential area. We worked closely with Skanska BAM throughout this two-year project.
